Oberammergau is located in the Bavarian District of Garmisch-Partenkirschen, which was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics.
The town has been known as the home of a long tradition of woodcarving. The streets of central Oberammergau are home to many woodcarver shops, with pieces ranging from religious subjects, to toys, to humoristic portraits.
